About Australian Labradoodles
Australian Labradoodle vs. Labradoodle
History of the Australian Labradoodle
In the 1980’s, the first known litter of Labradoodle puppies were produced by Wally Conron of the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia. This was done in response to a visually impaired woman’s need for an allergy-friendly dog who importantly, wouldn’t aggravate her husband’s allergies. The ultimate goal was to create a breed that was asthma and allergy friendly with the temperament seen in a service dog.
Wally Conran’s efforts were then continued by breeders in Australia where litters were produced with consistent conformation, coat types as well as temperaments. Moving forward years later, other dog breeds were incorporated into the lines of Labradoodles. These included the American and English Cocker Spaniel, Curly Coat Retriever and Irish Water Spaniel. The Australian Labradoodle is now considered to be a cross between the Poodle, Cocker Spaniel and Labrador Retriever.
The Labradoodle is a cross between the Labrador Retriever and Poodle. Importantly, the Australian Labradoodle is consistent in producing exceptional temperaments and coat types as well as allergy friendly coats.

Generations Defined
F1:
First cross otherwise known as “first generation.” Breeding a purebred Labrador Retriever to a Poodle. Coats will be hair to fleece typically with low to moderate shedding. The results are mixed as two “like” dogs are not bred.
F1B:
The “B” means backcross. An F1 labradoodle is bred to a purebred poodle. Coats will be hair or fleece. If both parents are non-shedding (as much as any dog can be non-shedding) this breeding will reflect low to non-shedding puppies. The results are “mixed” as two “like” dogs are not bred.
Australian Labradoodle:
In some pairings, puppies will have similar characteristics but can be mixed as well. They will have the DNA of a Poodle, Cocker Spaniel and Labrador. Coats will be low to non-shedding (as much as any dog can be non-shedding) if this is true of the parents.
Multigenerational Australian Labradoodle:
Breeding one Australian Labradoodle to another Australian Labradoodle. Low to non-shedding coats, allergy and asthma friendly. Consistent in great temperaments and conformation. The ALAA defines 4 consecutive matings when breeding Australian Labradoodle to Australian Labradoodle, as purebred.
